Cancellieri Shows Brief Sparks of Brilliance in Positive Aspect for Unstable Lazio

The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had conceded ten goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were finishing their latest protest in a long-running conflict with club owner Claudio Lotito.

A Season Unraveling?

Was the team's progress falling apart, or did there exist a thread holding it together from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, before he publicly stated that the management had not mentioned a registration embargo they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Rumours that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Roman club appeared equally disorganized on the pitch as off the field, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, observers have struggled to ascertain if they are improving or imploding.

Cancellieri's Surprising Presence

A single player remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to remain with Lazio during this campaign. He completed the last one on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were advocating for him to remain there temporarily. The signing restriction forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team lacking backup options.

Cancellieri arrived in the first place under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."

Finding His Natural Fit

Perhaps the manager was still trying to identify the exact type of the player's talent. Labeled as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for the majority of that term as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings while playing for Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
