Around 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postboxes were vandalized, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Law enforcement state they were contacted during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish liquid.
The substance had been applied in the shape of a swastika, they stated.
Officers then discovered multiple other marked vehicles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement report early analysis suggest the fluid was most likely human bodily fluid.
"Currently there is no clue as to where it came from; officials are currently not cognizant of any injuries in relation with the event," they added.
City officials said they were trying "to unravel the incident" and have asked to the community for information.
A high-ranking representative said the vandalism made him without words and required to be addressed rapidly.
"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reopens the pain of the right-wing violent incident five years ago," he stated on social media, recalling the death of nine victims by a assailant aiming at people of migrant background in February 2020.
